Simple Machines

Next Steps

Picture
Students have worked hard scaffolding their knowledge towards the high inference task:

Thinking like a scientist or an architect, create or assemble a machine that uses a lever to propel an object as far as possible.

We will work from a letter received from the Mattel Toy company that requires a new toy to be built to propel objects as far as possible and are looking for new designs.

From the criteria we have built throughout the sequence, by looking at what we think is important, analyzing exemplars, and adding specific details, students will work in groups of three to build their new toy.

Students will be required to buy their supplies from the building store and will be given $100.00 each to purchase items.

Peer assessment will be built into this when groups are finished their projects and then will go around to give feedback on the toys and students will be given the opportunity to make modifications.

Students will present their toys to the group and then celebrate their success by demonstrating how their toy propels objects.

Students will self reflect on their project, they liked and what they would do differently next time.
